Primarily, Sober Con is an event that provides sober alcohol and drug-free entertainment for all. The target audience is those of us in recovery, but anyone interested in attending is welcome.
Sober Con is also a fundraiser for organizations that serve those recovering from drug and alcohol use. This time, all proceeds will be donated to Shatterproof. Find out more about Shatterproof here.
Funding for the event will be through:
- Advance ticket sales online through Eventbrite.
- Gate receipts for admission at the show (box office).
- Spot fees for approved vendors and a percentage of their sales.
- Official Sober Con merchandise sales. T-shirts, hats, etc.
- GoFundMe campaign.
- Live auctions at the event for donated items.
- Donation collections at the event.
Where the money goes:
- All revenue will be contributed to Shatterproof until the donation goal is reached. Additional revenue, if any, will cover:
- Venue expenses.
- Audio, visual rentals: P.A. microphone, sound system, lighting, big screen projecting, etc.
- Headlining acts, performers will be considered for compensation if funds are still available. Other performers will donate their time and talent for the benefit of Shatterproof, exposure, and connection and networking with fellow musicians, comedians, and promotional professionals in attendance.
In the event all these financial goals are met, surplus funds will compensate event staff:
- CEO (me)
- CEO assistant
- CFO (you)
- CEO assistant.
- Security.
Based on previous experience from Sober Con 2024, the first two goals (listed in green) WILL be met. If revenue is less than expected, staff will be rewarded with the benefits of:
- Being of service to others.
- Experience of being part of an event of large magnitude.
- Resume’ content: “Volunteer work”.
- continued legacy status for future events.
With zero experience at this specific type of event, the Sober Con 2024 Staff was successful in selling out the event, with 200-plus paid attendees. We provided much-needed sober fun to those in recovery seeking an Entertainment event free of the triggers of alcohol and drugs, as often experienced in typical concerts and comedy clubs.
The measure of success is – fun for our guests, reaching the pre-determined donation goal for the beneficiaries without financial loss to some of us who paid some expenses out of pocket.
Sober Con II should be a stronger draw. I am getting requests from the sober community to do it again. While legacy performers are eager to repeat the success and experience of Sober Con 2024. I am in talks with some more “name” bands and comedians.
The CFO will need to be a good “numbers” person and clerically sound. Dedicated to the cause. Understanding that if revenue is lower than expected, it may turn into volunteerism. You will gain valuable experience that you probably will never have the opportunity to get elsewhere.
If revenue is as expected or better, a predetermined percentage of leftover funds will be dispersed to the above-mentioned staff.
I am in talks with a documentarian who might be willing to film everything, before, during, and after. The movie will be a permanent record of the event that will be compensation for the key helpers. Anyone who appears in the documentary will get an IMDb listing.
What the CFO does to assist the CEO:
- Handle GoFundMe activity.
- Oversee Eventbrite online ticket sales.
- All aspects of book-keeping.
The CFO will be privy to all financial aspects of the event. The CFO will be the treasurer during the event.
The success/revenue of the event will be an exact result of what we put into it.
The date of the event will be determined by my staff and I. There is no hurry, we will do it right. I am calling it Sober Con II because Sober Con 2025 might be too early. UPDATE – The event date is slated for Saturday November 15, 2025.
